Zach Merrett was selected with pick 26 in the 2013 National Draft. A highly rated junior, Merrett wasted no time making an impact at the Bombers.

Bio

Zach Merrett grew up in Cobden, Victoria before boarding at Melbourne Grammar School on a cricket scholarship.

After another solid season in 2015, Merrett was promoted to the Essendon Leadership Group ahead of the 2016 season, and if he hadn’t already convinced the AFL world he was a genuine star in the making, his 2016 season put it beyond doubt. Merrett collected 657 possessions over the season, the most ever recorded by a Bomber’s player in one year. He went on to win the club Best and Fairest, and captained his side in the last few games of the season. In 2017 Merrett was named Vice-Captain of the Bombers, and continued his fine form from the previous year. He picked up his first selection in the All-Australian side, and in 2018 played his 100th game after barely missing a game since his debut. The classy midfielder will be one of the key players and leaders at Essendon for many years to come, as he looks to add to his already illustrious career.

Away from football Zach loves American sports and is learning more about business, self improvement and when time permits he heads back home to see his family with his beloved Golden Retriever Maya.

Zach is a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) ambassador and a Nike Athlete

Testimonials

Zach has been a long-standing Ambassador for the Nike brand – and with his best football ahead of him – we didn’t hesitate to recently renew his endorsement deal. His football ability speaks for itself and he is a leading candidate to be the next Essendon captain. He has been a pleasure to work with, is well respected within Nike and has continues to represent our Brand with distinction. We have seen the progression of Zach - both professionally and personally - and Nike are proud to have Zach onboard and look forward to continuing to grow together.
