Sam Docherty is one of the premier rebounding defenders in the competition. In his second year as captain, Doc provides enormous leadership and structure to the Blues defensive half.
Born in Country Victoria, Sam grew up in Phillip Island and was immediately part of the local football club. Sam’s footballing ability was evident at a young age debuting in the senior side at just 15.
After a strong top age draft year for Gippsland Power and Vic Country Sam was selected by the Brisbane Lions with pick 11 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft. Injury interruptions throughout his first two seasons saw Sam manage just the 12 games at the Lions. Prior to the 2014 season Sam made the move back to his home state which saw him end up at the Carlton FC. A club that he supported growing up, Sam is now an integral part of the Blues next finals campaign.
Sam is a keen and more than capable golfer that can usually be found playing in the Mornington Peninsula over summer. Whilst Sam was recovering from back to back knee reconstructions he used the time away to upskill his coaching and speaking capabilities. Sam is humble and confidant with microphone in and more than capable speaking in front of large crowds.
Sam is a passionate ambassador for MacKillop Family Services where he can use his platform to help vulnerable children get an education and be supported. For me education is so important. School is where I made a lot of my life long friends and early social connections. I wouldn’t be where I am today without school. Everyone deserves the right to an education, and it has been great to see the impact MacKillop’s therapy dogs can have on helping vulnerable children get back to the classroom. Donating to Paws4Kids will allow more vulnerable children to get a better start and opportunity at an amazing life.
